Given ideal AD & DA converters with brick wall filters, and assuming you are not inadvertently AM modulating the signal above fs/2, the error in the reconstructed output should be consistent with the expected amount of quantization error. But since practical filters are not quite brick wall, some loss is expected as you get close to fs/2, but not all the way down at fs/4. Sounds like you have found some interesting behavior. Someday when you find the time, I hope you will post what you're doing on your web site.
