I have an open mind about ultrasonic perception, but the whole 20-20kHz bandwidth attributed to human hearing is based on the assumption that we only perceive sounds through the ear.

This is clearly not true. Bone conduction and resonance also plays a part, as well as possibly the skin. Our ability to perceive sounds through such mechanisms are not well understood, but they possibly could extend to ultrasonics.

Studies so far have been rather inconclusive, but I wouldn't dismiss the importance of a bandwidth higher than 20kHz so easily.
