Bach: "Passacaglia and Fugue in Cmin" / Schubert: "Trout Quintet"

Boybees,

I usually use Bach organ- on LP if possible- when I'm especially considering bass reproduction. I've spent a lot of time hearing and playing pipe organs and those bass notes are not colourless mud there to add an undefinable rumble- the stops are voiced and have sharply defined timbres. A 32' stop at the bottom will be trying to make under 30 cycles and at a fairly high sound pressure.

Electronic and/or amplified instruments useless to judge bass as the timbre can be manipulated to be anything- I can't make reference as to the accuracy of the timbre.

There are recordings of the Passacaglia that are supposed to reproduce down near this realm- Telarc often broadcast this kind of thing, and for me, whether this sound is opaque and sluggish or nimble, transparent and with a natural timbre will constitute my main judgments of the bass.

When I want to judge bass plus bass imaging, I like Schubert's "Trout Qunitet" -if the double bass is a vague grumble without pitch and bow sounds, and spaceless, I know again something is letting me down- down there in the bass.

As for everything audio, bass reproduction is individual: In my office system I use an Audio Research D130 amplifier, which was criticised for a less than robust bass, but I find it puts out excellent bass- whenever it receives some good stuff to chew on. Thanks to Bach organ, with the case of the D130, I believe it's the refinement in timbre and outstanding transparency of the bass that actually makes the bass seem light to some.

Cheers,

Bambi B
