To the sensible people out there (eg. not T.): about dynamic range

I don't think that dynamic range in the abstract is what differentiates vinyl from digital. I think it is the relationship between dynamic range and noise. Unfortunately the noise patterns of vinyl are to easily recognizable...I don't think any of us would mistake vinyl playback even double blind...No, the problem is with the high level of noise which gets in the way of enjoyment. Until a few years ago I could have perhaps conceded that CD's sins were too many and the balance was stil in favor of vinyl inspite of the noise, but nowadays...noiseshaping has come a long way, jitter is down to deminimus levels, and digital hi-rez is king of audioland...until the next best thing (a new analog medium perhaps?).

BTW, anyone who thinks a new analog medium will sound like vinyl is bound to be mistaken. IN DBT vinyl noise is so easy to detect that there is no way there will ever be any confusion. the trick will be to see whether the new analog standard is distinguishable from hi-rez PCM or DSD. I'm willing to bet it won't...
