I agree with "...it is the ability to resolve detail". Think of a beaded cymbal.

In low-res systems, beaded cymbals sound little different than standard cymbals of the same size. In hi-res systems, one can hear, to greater or lesser degrees, the sounds of the beads vibrating on the cymbal.

Another example. Tympanis can be played (struck) with sticks that vary greatly in hardness of the heads. Hi-resolution systems will resolve the different sounds of hard v. soft sticks.
