I have a few different preferences. When testing our speakers, cables and amplifiers we start out with the good female vocal we are familiar with such as Eva Cassidy, Jennifer Warnes, etc. Next comes the instruments with the Sax being a favorite. If you don't have the vocals and horns right, there is no need to proceed any further yet.After we have the midrange and upper end correct, we then move on to a good drum track recording for the lower frequencies such as Sheffield Labs Drum & Track Disc (and some nice Blues recordings)
Obviously there is more that comes into the picture but this is where we start.
This is a very good question and I am interested in seeing how others go about the "evaluation" process.
