I've listened to and compared all of the following, and I have samples of most of them.Master Tape @ 7.5, 15, and 30 ips.
Master Disc recorded from Studio Master Tape.
Consumer copy of the Master Disc from tape.
Master Disc recorded Direct to Disc.
Consumer copy of Direct to Disc.
Master Disc recorded from Direct to Disc safety tape.
Master Discs made on different lathes, with different driving amps, and with different cutting heads. In my experience they all sound different. I also found that the closer the media was to the original performance, in terms of which generation or copy it was, the better it was.
The Studio Master Tape was a little better than the Master Disc made from it.
The Master Disc was way better than the final Consumer Copy pressing made from it.
The Master Direct to Disc was a little better than the Safety Tape made at the same time.
The Master Direct to Disc was way better than the final Consumer Copy pressing made from it.
The Consumer Copy pressing of a Direct to Disc was better than a Consumer Copy pressing made from a Master Tape. So, I found that the original Master Tape or original Master Disc were far better than the mass produced copy that the customer eventually gets. The major loss in quality is created by successive generations.
