Anyone Ever Compared Direct to Disk Versus Master Tapes?

I was wondering if any inmate had ever had the opportunity to compare a recording made direct to disk to its 1st generation master tape? I understand that many of the direct to disk recording sessions also had a tape machine recording as well. I love the sound of direct to disk, warts and all, but wonder if they are more truthful than tape.
