If not and it happens when you play your speakers louder it might be amp clipping or cone drivers breakin up.If it happens in both speakers and headphones and even at low volume I would suspect recording digital graininess (especially in the decay part) but if the same recording sometimes play fine (as you suggest) then I'm stumped.
