Re: Why do cymbals in the some recordings sound broken or jagged?

very rarely have i heard any system reproduce cymbals accurately, but a good part of the fault lies in the recording-mixdown process- many times limiters are used (some crunch, others sound like biting into warm pizza), and even analogue tape can saturate quickly and easily at these frequencies- extreme care must be used with studio gear, and even then, it's never transparent. Digital decks & multitracks have built-in limiters! Listen to Sheffield Labs direct-to-disc recordings and you'll get an idea about how they can sound without all that crap (real, anyway), like Harry James w/ Les Demerle (incredible drummer!!!).
