Could very well be the recording and not your system at all. Over use of bad limiting equipment is all to common in classical recordings. Just as the music should be peaking it all kind of goes nowhere. Sometimes even seems to drop in level and excitement. Do all powerfull orchestral recordings do that on your system ? Are we talking LP or CD here ? You might try this recording that brought up the issue at you dealers or a friends system. See what you get.
A good test recording to have around is any Telarc sampler CD. There are a few made. They have very little to no peak limiting. See how they sound on your system,I bet they will be just fine. In LP's try and get any of the Sheffield Labs or Crystal Clear recordings that were done direct to disc. If you get the same result with this Telarc or Sheffield stuff then you do have a system problem.
