That may actually be the case with the Sanders. He doesn't go into much detail as to how he achieved an electrostatic panel that can play that loud, with so little distortion and no risk of damage.
All I can say to that is no one had achieved anything close to that from electrostats 35 years ago.
The JBLs are a different story though. The shaping of the horn driver was achieved through a combination of advanced CAD design and advanced measurements neither of which were remotely possible 35 years ago. That kind of specific radiation pattern control was scifi 35 years ago.
