RE: People would still know who Robert Johnson was

mostly ... however, Alexis Korner and John Mayall were largely responsible for bringing the blues to Britain, especially Korner's radio program

other recognizable notables were fans, but those two reached the audience 1st

over here we might attribute Elvis with introducing blues to the masses

but of course, there were several country & jazz artist that helped it crossover into popular music ... but really, let's not forget that George Gershwin was pivotal in this 'stateside' very early on
