I use a more granulated approach to determine capability.

1) There are smart, highly educated people that cannot effectively apply that knowledge because they lack common sense. Perhaps you could call common sense a catalyst.

2) You can go out and meet people working regular jobs, with a minimum education, that can grasp and resolve everyday issues far better than the ones mentioned above. They have limited education but possess common sense.

3) Some have limited intelligence and no common sense, where you wonder how they make it home at night (if they have one).

4) The truly lucky ones are both smart and have common sense.

The second and forth group can spot the first and third group from a mile away. The lack of common sense sticks out like a sore thumb.

Your example - crappy concert, and at the end most of the crowd stands and furiously claps. 2 and 4 think 'what is wrong with these people' (the widely held belief). 1 and 3 decide, on hearing the clapping (widely held belief), also stand up and start furiously clapping. Then they see the person next to them not clapping and get pissed off.
