"Why was this old stuff unimportant before, but relevant now?"
Societies definition of what is right and wrong or good and bad changes with time. There is nothing wrong with going back and re-evaluating what someone has said or done within the light of new information. We all have the right to change our mind about someone based on how our perceptions of right and wrong have changed. As Clapton has the right to not change.
"Is the general opinion that Clapton is lying about his vaccination experience, and if so on what basis?"
I didn't get the impression he was lying but that he is wrong. Most scientists and science say he is wrong. If someone puts out incorrect information that can hurt people I believe they are doing something wrong. If someone who has a large platform puts out misinformation or disinformation, a lot of people can be hurt. They should be held accountable for that.
"but basing your opinion of his music on his position on something non musical seems bizarre."
Why is that bizarre? I base my like or dislike of most people based on a myriad of factors, not just a couple.
"Perhaps if Rolling Stone put out a hit piece on your favorite speakers because they had a personal issue with the designer, you would take the speakers out in the back yard and burn them."
Of course I wouldn't do that. Speakers don't willingly create misinformation. People do. If Rolling Stone put out a hit piece on my favorite speakers, I might decline to read Rolling Stone.
"In a free society Clapton is entitled to his opinion, even if it is different than yours."
Of course he is entitled to his opinion. But if he is creating misinformation that is hurting people he should be called out for that.
