"Jeez, Bob, have you no concern whatsoever that you may have given a recommendation to a product which is simply re-branded and priced 2 1/2 times higher (or more) than the exact same gadget available elsewhere?"As I said to Mr. Mind, I didn't recommend the duplicator, I praised the RCCD's. And I said, I didn't know anything about the duplicator, which some have sensibly taken as an innuendo that perhaps there was more to be known about it. I did say I was persuaded by the audition to go out and buy the whole package, yes. So some have inferred I was recommending it, which is not unreasonable. That's usually what reviewers mean when they say, "So reader, I married him." But what I was doing when I said that was by implication recommending RealityCheck, recommending the experience I had just had. I was expressing enthusiasm for what I had just heard. I referred those who wanted more info on the machine to Bill Gaw's review on Enjoy the Music.
Now one of the contributors to this thread actually recommended the duplicator itself to his friends and urged them to buy it. He is feeling serious concerns and has made them known. I did not feel I knew enough about the machine to recommend it by itself. So while, like some of you, I do wonder if George's machine is identical to the far cheaper ones and expect the truth will out one of these days, no I don't feel bad about what I wrote. To say more than I knew for a fact would have been saying more than I was comfortable saying about George Louis. So I praised what he had done to redbook digital in my house.
"You would be comfortable with your review if it turned out that in fact the only thing unique about RC was the fluids?"
Yes, though I'd be a bit perplexed at why George would go through all of this dance. And I'll concede it does strike me as a bit of a dance. I say yes, again because I was pretty clear it was the discs and the process I was reviewing. You would be just to say I wrote an incomplete review: that I should have reviewed the parts as well as the whole. But I didn't do that: I didn't feel I knew enough or that I was qualified. Had George told me more I would have reported that, as I do with other designers. Would I write a different review now? I guess what I'd do differently is that I'd say...oh hell, what can you say without any evidence either way? You can refuse to do the review without all of the information in hand. I could have done that. But I really liked what I heard, wanted to be another voice besides that of the beseiged Clark in favor of something that is clearly some sort of breakthrough in redbook technology. And so wrote what I could.
