But actually

"I for one have no doubt that even with modern amps DBTs will result in audible and statistically relevant differences, but preferrences are another matter altogether and not what is tested by a DBT for audio."

But in actual fact no test has ever been able to show such a result, so your position is not supported by the data.

However, I do completely agree with you that differences are completely different than preferences AND that preference in the short term is often the opposite of preference in the long term. We discuss this in our recent AES paper on perception.

Tests have shown that people are drawn to distortion in the short termas it actally adds a "quality" to the perception that is not normally there. This is often deemed in short listening tests to be desirable. However, in the longer term this same characteristic is found to be fatiguing and annoying. Can you say Bose.

People often find my speaker flat and lifeless on first audition because they lack all forms of distortion. But after hours and hours one finds no fatigue and comes to appreciate the transparency and lack of coloration. When paople say that a speaker is "voiced" I have to laugh. Like reproduction needs to be tuned!
