Certainly there have be source improvement. To fall back on personal experience, my first CDP, the well-reviewed at the time, Yamaha C2, sounded pretty gastly -- very bright and sharp, like broken glass in your ears as I decribed it. This is no longer true of recent CDPs playing good recordings.The same is true for amps as well. Again by personal experience, my current Bel Canto is leaps-and-bounds better than my Phase 400, as indeed was the NAD C270 that I owned, (except for the bass).
Of course, becasuse a amp is "musical" or "toe-tapping" doesn't prove it isn't accurate.
