hmm..

sm: ""Imagaing, being able to pinpoint the location of a musical instrument precisely had nothing to do with music. Timbral accuracy of musical instruments has everything to do with it ""

If one chooses monophonic reproduction, you are indeed correct. And, at the first level, this is also correct for stereo reproduction. But once this aspect has been addressed, there is still a ways to go. With your Direct/reflecting speakers, the process of deliverance of sound to you is both responsible for nice imaging, as well as making the system less susceptible to imaging problems. You avoid issues that confront those who do not have the d/r setup you do.

quoted:

"You, otoh, "cheat" with your reflecting speakers...you use a spacial time dependent source shift to give a larger image, so you are far less dependent on this small effect stuff...by design, the sideband images are fuzzied more, leaving the meat better visualized... "

sm: ""That is far closer to the way real musical instruments radiate their sound into space compared to the way most loudspeakers do.""

We certainly agree on this point. The question is more, can this real soundfield be simulates sufficiently with a pair of direct radiators..

quoted:

"I am not sure if Bose backed into it, or if it was by design.. but it is rather cool.."

sm: ""Dr Bose's technical justificaton for his direct/reflecting principle which rationalizes his speaker's radiating pattern by comparing the percentage of direct to reflected sound at Boston Symphony hall is off the wall. They have nothing to do with each other ""

Agreed. But the real explanation of why the system presents a good image is far more interesting and elegant.

sm: ""It's not in two tenths of a microsecond difference between the sound arriving from one speaker and another due to wire differences.""

umm, re-read my post. I was not talking about 200 nanoseconds, more like 2 to 10 usec. And, you are incorrect, this time domain is critical for imaging.

sm: "" It is too bad you have wasted your fine mind chasing this wild goose when there is big game out there to be caught. It is still out there, why not go after it instead? ""

Gonna hafta disagree big time here..."fine mind" indeed..insane, maybe, stupid..maybe, fine...thanks, but I know better :-)..

Trust me..I am not chasing the small fry. You've no idea, and I cannot yet embellish..

Cheers, John
