"I guess if the recording is that bad, I just don't listen to it."

I guess I've never understood the idea that equipment shall dictate what music one listens to. Seems a questionable priority.

In the course of my work I need to listen to recordings whose sound quality ranges from holy-sh!t master tapes to yikes-that's-horrifying crap. I'm glad I have some control over things to deal with the latter.

Good passive tone controls only require two circuit elements, and if they are the same high quality we expect from the rest of our preamps they can be very transparent. (When I modded my preamp one of my priorities was to use the best parts possible in the tone control circuits, just as I had elsewhere.) When not in use you've got one switch (the horror!) in the signal path.

No doubt my system isn't resolving enough to let me hear just how much damage that switch is doing--yet on the other hand in those rare instances when I need them, tone controls allow me to listen to just about anything. I get to choose, not the equipment.
