Tone Controls on most audio components are useless.

On audio components, Bass is usually centered around 100 Hz and Treble around 10 kHz. The problem is when adjusting Bass or Treble controls, the adjacent frequencies (below and above center frequency) are also effected because [octave] filtering is too broad. So in actuality, we my create more problem than solving.

That is why 1/3 octave equalizers (such as Alesis 30 band graphic equalizer) are usually recommended if trying to adjust any specific frequency without too much effecting [lower or higher] adjacent frequencies.
