Earlier there was an example of fixing steely strings. The problem is that in the original recording process there were probably 20 to 40 microphones each with its own eq applied. Let us say the stings used 3 mikes and were all eq'd on the bright side at 3khz by 6db. On the playback side if you reduce 3khz by 6db you also reduce al the other mikes by 6db. You may wind up with smoother strings but you will probably mess up everything else. Having been on the recording side I have no real problem with tone controls but in the long run I bet you will find that you bypass them 95% of the time. And the bypass switch will degrade the sound
