I can't stand noise! Window units are awful around tvs or stereos. To retrofit my house with ductwork and mount an ac unit was outrageous ($12,000) for just the first 2 floors. Also, most retrofits will allow sound to travel through the duct work. Yes, we could spy on the kids but they can hear me listening to music late night.
The solution was a ductless split system. You can get them from 1 to 4 heads (1 to 4 rooms) and anywhere from 1 to 2.5 tons. It is a small register that you hang on the wall which cools, filters air, heats, oscillating fan and is nearly silent! The unit I bought was $1900 and installation was about $800 for my whole first floor. Try acdirect.com in florida and buy wholesale.
