If you are installing a system for just one room (listening room or home theater), one option is to go with a ductless mini split system, such as one from Mitsubishi. I have had some experience with these units, being in the HVAC/R field, found them to be very reliable and quiet (to the point of having to feel the supply air outlet to confirm that the unit is running!) These units are more expensive then a standard duct split system, not sure if you're going with a package rooftop, but the installation cost is much lower than either. The air handling unit hangs on the wall, with only the freon tube lineset penetrating to the outside condenser. They also come in the Heat pump varity. Also go to Finehomebuilding Breaktime forum, great guys over there that can help you.
