ALL sounds excite the mechanical portion of our hearing, but our brain only interprets content from 20hz-to 20khz (at best) as "sound". Infrasonic, or ultrasonic content still excites our ears, but is consciously interpreted as something other than "sound".
Actually, all "sounds' may impact the mechanical portions of our hearing mechanisms but not all of them are transduced into electrical signals that are conveyed to the brainstem. The transduction and the transmission are limited in bandwidth. Infrasonic and ultrasonic stimuli are, by definition, not transduced by auditory mechanisms.
