I am talking about Mom and Pop stores here.My experience is that if they have a demo unit that in some cases has been sitting in a store being played for years - they have no problem letting you take it home for a week-end with a credit card hold.
If its a new in box item and they have a demo in the store for you to hear they are not very receptive to returns just because the synergy with your system was not as good as what you heard in their showroom.
Buying from out of state is a mixed bag with some having a return period and others offering absolutely no return regardless -even if the item is defective - if it is defective you must ship manufacture at your own cost.
and in 2 examples - that actually happened to me first hand- this time we are not talking HIFI- I purchased - from 2 different mom and pop shops - a watch which was DOA and a DVD player which was DOA - in both cases I was offered no money back and was told to ship item to service center -AT MY OWN COST - I repeat neither item worked for even 3 seconds for me - they were dead on arrival !
moral of story - find out the return policy and find out who pays for shipping both coming and going BEFORE you buy
