I agree that dealers shouldn't be obligated to let people try out stereo gear at home and then return it for a full refund. It seems reasonable to expect the customer to pay a restocking/discounted fee (and return shipping) to audition gear, especially for small-scale businesses. There are numerous manufacturers and retailers that do allow a home audition so buy from them if you're not sure whether you'll like a particular piece of stereo equipment. The alternative is to do your homework and/or travel to a dealer's store.
Most of my stereo system was purchased without hearing it first. Exceptions were the main speakers and power amp and I've only returned one item, a pair of stand mount speakers, because I didn't like how they sounded. I paid return shipping and a resale fee. It was worth it.
