Dipoles start to roll off early but it is a gentle roll-off and you can follow bass tunes all the way down though your trouser legs will not flap. And they don't set-off room nodes as much as mono-pole bass speakers. I've never heard the gradient approach, but I've read many good reports of those an similar solutions. I've always meant to make my own version. One day .....
