A guy who lived in San Diego suburbs worked occasionally in LA recording studios, He had a mystery system at home in a dedicated room. I say mystery because everything was behind a scrim so you couldn't see the speakers or electronics. All he would reveal was they were horn speakers (suspect Western Electric) and the source was a 15 IPS 2nd gen master tape. Music was big band jazz and I was amazed by the tonal and dynamic realism. OK, I might have been influenced because that actually fluttered my pant legs!
I appreciated that even more some years later. One of my audio buddies had discovered a big band jazz group practiced twice a month at a local American Legion. He had a card so we could go in, get a cheap drink, and listen to the band practice from 10-15 feet away. All I can say is if you've never heard an 18-piece jazz band up close live you probably don't know what you're missing in playback dynamics!
Also, I agree with Larry I, MBL can be hit or miss. I've heard them at multiple audio shows, sometime the most involving and realistic sound there, other times just ho-hum. Guess it was all in the room and set up.
