Familiarize yourself with a couple of audiophile approved records for your test set but make sure the set includes a good sampling of records you actually enjoy playing.
It made so much sense considering my dealer at the time would tell me to upgrade the stereo or buy different records when I mentioned how bad the stereo he sold me sounded when playing some records - as in the stereo was either not good enough for a record or too good for a record whenever it sounded bad.
