There always are trade offs. But a well designed closed box has way less over hang than a well designed reflex box and that makes it my choice. A little more distortion is not a huge deal. Overhang is very evident.
My woofers were properly designed to be either reflex or the port closed. The reflex is a Bessel function(minimum time delay) and sounds excellent. But the closed version is simply more controlled and detailed. My price is bass extension and quantity. The reflex -3dB is 23 Hz and the closed box is at 33 Hz. But that covers almost everything called music(except organ, etc.). Interestingly the reflex seems to have a richer sound due to the over hang. I discussed this with the designer and we both exactly agree on what we hear and he prefers the reflex version and I prefer closed box. I'm pretty sure most listeners will choose the reflex version. I can't give up the accuracy and control.
