Similar set-up, different result

Two, 9-inch woofers per side in sealed enclosures and two, single 12-inch driver subs in ported boxes. Subs roll in at a low'ish volume, at about 40-45 Hz and fill the bottom octave nicely. When I forget to turn on the subs, like occasionally after I shut them down during a thunder storm, I immediately miss them, even though their effect is subtle.

I like the sound of how my sealed box main speakers roll-off the bass (compared to a similar ported model from the same manufacturer), but I never noticed any negative issues with bass as a result of the subs being ported. I suspect having a port allows them to go deeper. However, the effect of a port is probably different than for main speakers, since the driver motor, amp power, and damping factor are all probably different for subs than for mains.
