I suspect many people are doing with their subs what I did, which is setting them up and become impressed with added bass extension and ability to hear the recorded venue ambiance, etc. And NOT continue to double-check their effects over time.
One day, I accidentally forgot to turn on my 12" sealed sub and thought,"Dang, today my system sounds so pure, so clear, vocals so revelatory!" Then I looked to see what was going on, to find the sub was not turned on.
Mind you, my main speakers already have two 8" woofers per side and ran full range, with sub just filling in at the lowest X-over setting (40Hz) and barely audible unless pipe organs, etc. Even then, it was affecting the clarity way higher in range. It's crazy.
