"Why do so many people overlook the awesome power of the placebo effect?"
Ego. With the time, financial and emotional investment made in one's stereo system often comes an intense emotional investment in one's status as an audiophile and the belief that all of one's purchases were based on their skills as audiophiles. It becomes a major part of their self identity
When confronted with the realities of the human auditory system via scientific research they choose to reject the science and hang on to their sense of identity and status as an audiophile.
This leads to a cycle of patterns that allow companies like Synergistic Research to sell power cords for $30K that are nothing more than stock power cords with relatively cheap cosmetic dressing to make them look impressive and some creative technobabble that sounds feasible to folks who are easily dazzled by words that sound sciency but actually know little to nothing about the science that is allegedly in play.
On top of that it's easy. All you need is money to get on the hifi gear merry-go-round. While things like room acoustics are hard, take real research and some actual work to implement. And they generally don't look nearly as cool.
Why else would the near universal reaction to a lecture about something like accuracy in audio by one of the world's leading scientists in the field be so underwhelming? It's a lot easier to buy a shinier more expensive power cord than it is to do a deep dive into psychoacoustics or the physics of audio.
