RE: Colouration vs neutrality at discomfort volume threshold

"I don't totally agree with this premise. I think it is probably distortion that is bothering Dave. Distortion that is coloring those upper frequencies. I've found that as I've removed audible distortion, I can listen louder. Ameliorating those high frequency distortions with EQ/coloration allows Dave to play a bit louder. In my experience most high frequency distortions seems to be time/phase based, not EQ based. A high frequencies that arrives too soon or too late will stand apart from the music, sounding bright. The issue is that most systems today have a lot of distortion in these areas IMHO."

Interesting point for my dilema. My onboard Realtek ALC897 was a lot more pleasing to my ears at loud volumes. I loved it. I bought a new creative AE7 soundcard, and it was harsh, it went from joy to the pain of a job interview when listening to music. This was both analog out by the way. Even with optical out, so, now my AVR DAC is used, I still get the slight problem. No idea, if somehow the soundcard is transporting distortion, noise through optical?

Either way, I'm left with an enigma to solve. And money down the drain possibly.
