HP was a terrific writer although he was often over the top with his self indulgence.
His philosophy on audio was IMO extremely misguided and as such he lead an entire generation of audiophiles down a dead end rabbit hole.
You are right, there is no "absolute sound." Live acoustic music comes in a wide variety of flavors. Perhaps even wider in variety than stereo recording and playback.
It does not work as a reliable objective reference for numerous reasons.
I think quite possibly the most tragic thing HP did was drive an entire group of audiophiles to go to classical concerts so they can focus on trying to create this mythical aural memory of "the absolute sound." So many great opportunities to actually enjoy great concert experiences lost on those folks. Almost like concert goers recording concerts on Iphones instead of being in the moment and fully present and watching the actual concert.
