You can hear the differences and what's wrong with wretched excess as long as there are also reasonable alternatives such as the Technics you mention?
The world has always had super luxury objects for the wealthy. And no I don't have super costly gear. My system would cost well over 5 figures to replace but it didn't cost me that. Most of my gear is decades old when it was cheaper(my arm and table are 4 decades old). My speakers were designed by a talented friend. And my pickup is an old Tecnics moving magnet, not a moving coil albeit better than a ton of moving coils.
