I agree. It was like Ford and GM uniting but sort of staying seperate. I'm not the biggest ARC advocate(I have owned older ARC gear including one of the 1st 50 SP3 preamps) but over the years they've made many notable products. They are often credited with reseeding tube amplification and they are certainly massively significant there. And I would argue that along with Mark Levinson they are responsible(for better or worse) with the upward, super exotic stratosphere audio has come in the last half century. They are iconic in the real sense like McIntosh and it would be tragic to lose the company either through its demise or by it just ending up as a famous old name producing so so gear.
