Johnny Carson asked Bette Midler what she was doing with her new-found wealth. So, this was in the early 1970s.
She replied:
"I'm saving it for a rainy day, because the next one is gonna be a f^#@in' duh-LOOGE!"
("duh-LOOGE" not "DELL-yuge." I just love it.)
Johnny Carson cracked up.
In a faculty-reviewed and faculty-approved academic paper in 1979, I predicted that well-intentioned Federal policies and interventions in the housing market, specifically tax incentives and loan subsidies (as well as political administrations jiggering the economy to favor homeowners over renters) were all fueling a "bubble" that was sure to burst.
That would be impressive; but for the fact that that was 1979, and I expected the bubble to burst by the early 1990s. It burst in 2007-2008.
I feel the way today about commercial real estate lending (1stQ 2023, $64 Billion in troubled, non-performing commercial real estate loans) as I did about the housing economy back then.
We might squeak by... Yield-Curve Inversions seem to happen before all Recessions; but, NOT EVERY Yield-Curve Inversion is followed by a Recession.
My wise-ass joke when I was studying Economics at Brown was, "Economists have successfully predicted 11 of the past 6 Recessions."
Bottom line, high-end audio is a luxury good, much of which is bought by people of comparatively modest means. BTW, I can't resist re-posting the photo of Gordon Getty's music room.
So, tooling up to reissue Legacy ARC amps strikes me as a role of the dice. Whereas a Burger King franchise located on a comparatively sleepy state highway with a nicely mixed demographic driving by, strikes me as a Gilt-Edged Annuity.
amb,
