... What people have called "harshness" that they associate with digital sound.

Apart from the fact that some recording just aren't very good, I found the so-called "harshness" tends very much to go away as you switch to ultra-low distortion components in you reproduction chain. So what I found to be bit harsh & bright to "air" and depth when I improved my DAC and amp; e.g. I'm referring specifically the the Eder Quartet's recordings of Shostakovich string quartets.
