RE: Humm ... yeah, well ...

"Vinyl is, for all intents & purposes, incapable of producing as deep bass as digital."

Well, if you go below 16 Hz, you're correct..... But how many people have systems capable of that? (Feedback and arm/cartridge resonance becomes a problem.)

"Distortion is more relevant than flat response, (above vinyl's bass limitation), IMHO. However as for the relevance of harmonics above 22kHz, that is essentially nil since virtually nobody can hear them. (In my own case it's more like above 10kHz.)"

The harmonics above 22 kHz is subject to debate..... It may not be audible in a hearing test, but some claim it contributes to spatial cues, for example, of massed strings of a symphony orchestra..... (I'd be inclined to agree, but I've recently heard CD playback that comes pretty close.)

"Tubes certainly create more distortion than properly designed solid state. Vinyl does too relative to digital ..."

You're probably correct here too about the tubes and solid state..... But again, is the difference between 0.1 percent THD really noticeable compared to 0.001 percent? (I personally think other artifacts prevent a real test of such audibility.)

It is not too difficult to create solid state that supposedly produces distortion similar to that of tubes...... But no listener would mistake such amplifier design for a tube design. (I think Bob Carver designed solid state amps to mimic tubes..... But such products have not displaced tube products.)

And again, remember my comment about why digital audio does well with this particular spec...... Removing harmonics will always result in better THD numbers, even if it also removes harmonics from the music itself.
