As we must all admit, our exact chronologies might be a bit suspect, so I'm not entirely sure if it fits the era, but of the Big Power receivers I used during that period, I preferred my NAD 7080 over the Yamaha CR1000.
By this time Yam was really getting in to the "features". Lots of controls, many not defeatable.
NAD had 80 real watts, although I'm not sure I could say the Phono or Pre sounded as relaxed and open as a "good" Advent 300.
Another nice combination with the 300 was Hafler 220 (with Musical Concepts mods and beefed up power supply cap bank)Driving most any dynamic speaker this combo sounded great, lots of current and decent bass. Didn't particularly like the Acoustats, tho!All of this of course BC (before children)
oh, to be that young and enthusiastic again!
