I often see the term "hobby" here. That puzzles me. It implies that a person buys or builds an audio component to see how it sounds with other components - sort of a never-ending selection process. No doubt, ther are people for whom that IS the point.
Audio has never been a hobby for me. I love music, am a musician, and enjoy hearing it reproduced on a high quality sound system. But to obsess over things like cable supports and to change components every year or two - that's just a bit over the top. It's akin to someone who relishes tinkering with cars but only secondarily enjoys driving one.
