What was your first jump to audiophile class gear?

For me it was in the 80's after my wife and I had finally started to get ahead money wise. She green lighted the idea because she knew I wanted to and it was "my turn" to spend.

Old (but listenable) gear: Akia top of the line 2 ch receiver (remember those?), JBL L100 speakers (my wife's actually), Pioneer belt drive TT with Shure cartridge.

First high end gear: McIntosh MC7270 amp, McIntosh C37 preamp, wood cases for both, Thiel CS3 speakers (still have those in my HT), and Beogram 5000 TT. I admittedly had meter lust for the Mac gear and fell in love on first listen with the Thiels. The B&O TT was a dart throw and also based on looks, but its was a good table.

I think I got lucky because looking back that gear worked really well together and served me for over 20 years.

All new gear today in my listening room but that took two complete setups to finally get what I like.
