Enter the CD. In one fell swoop, all of the limitations of the LP and Cassette were eliminated. The sound was promised to be superior to the LP and the CD would sound the same after the 100th play as it did after the first. Insert disk and press play. The absence of surface noise and digital "clarity" virtually ensured the format's success in the market. LP sales plummeted as did cassette sales within a few years. The CD has reigned supreme for more than 25yrs. Why? Because it was a simple one box solution to existing problems. No fuss no muss.
The year of the least vinyl sales was 1993. Nowadays you can find vinyl for sale quite easily in many towns. In addition, newer bands prefer to release LPs because they are 'cool' and if you talk to members of those bands, they will tell you that they prefer the LPs not only for their coolness but also because they sound better. This is coming from 20-somethings, not seasoned audiophiles.
Cassettes are also experiencing a comeback of sorts.
My theory is that this is a sort of rebellion against the machine, but one that has the added advantage of better sound (analog) on the way. At least that's what we get told a lot- and we have lot's of band contacts here in town...
