It has been said that setting the bias too high will dramatically shorten tube life. I have found that to be true (Flash/Bang, tinkle). I found out that bias creeps up, so you gotta re-bias the amp as the tubes warm up, and get the final, long-term setting when it's nice and hot.I'm guessing your CJ uses red lights as bias level indicators. Perhaps they are improperly calibrated, or have drifted?
Might be worthwhile to try a set of the CJ Sovteks. If they pop, you have the expensive satisfaction of knowing you were right and CJ was wrong. Makes me think of what I want on my gravestone - "I TOLD you I was sick!"
