college & music

"Back then, if you wanted to hear your music you had to own a stereo ...and pretty much every home had one (or more). Today, there are too many alternative ways to listen to music, so less folks own stereos.

My daughter goes to UMASS/Amherst, a school of roughly 25K students. In her two years at the school she has seen three stereos, all in frat houses. She has never seen a dorm room with a stereo it.

When I was in college (late 70s) there were 16 rooms on the floor of my dorm and there were 16 stereos. Today I'd image those 16 rooms contain 32 iPods and 32 laptops."

And those 16 students with their ipods are getting way more music and better sound quality than those late 70's dorm rooms.

Remember, in dorm rooms, there are plenty of (a) thefts, (b) assholes, (c) drunks, and you have to move every year. Who wants speakers when you have an ipod? Speakers are for parties. Also, thanks to the "sue early and often" culture, colleges crack down on the slightest bit of fun and noise in on-campus dorms for fear that somebody underage might drink a beer (that's "pre-rape"). So the only speakers are at frat houses.

The future of the hobby is at head-fi.org. I'm starting to see more and more people out and about with upgraded headphones.

And more young people have to (a) live at home (b) work all day or other circumstances where headphones are the right answer.

I have a decent home stereo (maggies + ps audio) but I still get more music hours at work on my headphones, because I have to work.

I agree 100% with PG (except that I listen 97% to classical at home, but don't want to be a snob about it!).

The ultra-high end today is driven by ultra-rich Asian guys who want to be seen as refined and sophisticated and get laid too.

You can't afford it? Hey that's the new economics, not the hi-fi industry.
