my priorities are completely different today than they were 10-12 years ago when I owned Krell amplification and Martin Logan speakers.
I take much more satisfaction from building near SOTA audio gear than simply dropping $5-10K on it.
I'm conservative with my money to begin with, I like to get something for my dollar. What I see today is gear priced to the stratosphere based on what the market will bear. I'm talking about $10-40K speakers that use off the shelf $20-30 tweeters and el cheapo crossover parts. DIY audio isn't so much about saving money for me nowdays.
I see amplification with case work so exotic that it probably constitutes the majority of manufacturing cost for that piece. I'm talking about more than one manufacturer by the way. Now, if you're into aesthetics as well as good sound that's fantastic, I would rather spend my money on just the sound part, I don't mind well damped square boxes with heatsinks on both sides.
It was recently pointed out to me that there are headphone amps costing $10K. If you buy based on price go for it but that's not me.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
