I have been an audiophile since I can remember. I was trash picking speakers to add to my sytem at 12 y/oSeems posts like yours are too frequent lately. It's comes with the economy. People are jumping on on another like never before on here, no patience and too much judgement. People are pessimistic and depressed. I am lucky things are just tight. Just getting by.
Our hobby will never die. Saved? Saved from what?
It is safe. Afordable? Sure. New Yamaha reciever for $300, new Sony speaker for $200. Hook up the ipod and rock. TT's are being manufactured now more than the recent past. We are getting there. and will continue to grow. The economy is just stalling it.
It changes like everything else along with technology. Bottom line though it's all about the music.
I just finally got an ipod this year. First time using this device was three months ago. Guess what? I love it. It's convenience is great. I have my jukebox when I go to a party all in the palm of my hand. Or at work on break to relax. If I hear a song on the radio I love, I can have it in two minutes or less.
While this is all fine and fun I still need to spin records. I still need to play my guitar. I still love vintage gear and constatnly hunt for new things. I still am going the tube DIY route. All these morbid posts about giving up audiophilia are fine. Sometimes you have to put things down for a while. I found that in my life.
Like myself I feel most people in here do things at 110%. I have always done that. In high school when I golfed I golfed everyday. When I biked I biked everyday, thousands of miles. When I rode motorcycles I had to ride to Florida. The blue ridge twice. I had to cross the country on my cycle. All extremes.
the people who love audio will keep it alive. My good friend goes to 250 shows a year. He has a shit Sony system but he has his priorities right. He buys tickets. He loves to come to my house and listen. Says it's the best system he has ever heard. I will help him buy his system in the future. He had at least 10 ipods full. His priorites are right. Searching for that extra 10% of better sound at home and obsessing over it is OK until the fun ends. Then it's time to step away.
The manufacturers on here are trying to put out new gear. It is so hard to manufacture these days. They must do it for love. Tubes are at a all time high of popularity. Why? The sound. The music, the real reason. If a ipod dock sounded like my main rig I would own one. Manufacturing now is so hard. When I fished I fished every chance I got. I started a fishing lure business and lost my ass on it because I loved it. I have since put that hat down.
What I am trying to say is you have no worries. I think some of the members here should go buy a $75 guitar from target and learn to play. When I played I did it everyday. It's all about the music.
Step away for a while. Even a long time. When you come back it will taste that much better. Our hobby is so safe. Of all the hobbies I have had and put down music has never left and never will. If I am enjoying some hip hop with my son (trying to keep an open mind and some of it isn't bad) or playing in a band or cranking up my main rig I always tell myself to slow down and enjoy it. Tonight I played a little bass and watched my son play a computer car game. I thought about the world and how fucked up it is and how bad the future will be but I stopped myself. Played a whole fat "B" note and just listened and watched him and thought that I am lucky and blessed. I am not suffering like so many. I am lucky to have music. I am lucky to have this site. I am lucky to have this hobby. Quite possibly the best hobby in the world. It is safe as long as we are alive
Cheers
BTW I was very lucky to have my friend put me up at his house over the summer. I was away for two weeks. Before I left I was obsessing over my TT I had recently restored and thought it was sounding worse and worse. When I got back after not spinning for three to four weeks it blew me away. I was fucking with myself. You will be fine Peter, so will the hobby. If you live in America you can own a store. you can do anything you want. Who said you can't sell 20K speakers and ipod docks in the same store? No rules. Don't worry about what can't happen. You can make a difference if you are reeally passionate about it.
I am trying to build chassis for DIY'ers. just a simple chassis. It's hard. But we need to just do it. My great friend and philosopher ( spending 20 hours a day machining will give you deep thoughts) gives me great advise. We talk about the world and the shit that goes on. The recession will weed out the weak. Sounds cruel but it's true. It will make the true and really dedicated rise to the top. That will ony strenghten out hobby. Music is not going anywhere. We will need it to tame the beasts.
I gave up pot at new years so my apologies for the deep thoughts. lol
I don't miss it either.
