Some of the kits may not be OK, either. At least one line of kit (it wasn't Dynaco) didn't always work right. Many years later, a guy who worked for me explained it: his father had been the purchasing agent for the company and was wont to make various part substitutions on his own "expertise" without consulting with the engineering department. Of course when the assembled device doesn't quite work right there's no accountability, it must have been faulty assembly by the customer...
I think you need to know the specific reputation of the company, at least, and preferably the reputation of the model. And you probably need to have a little experience with construction, enough to be able to recognize assembly quality or lack thereof.
